He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Bechtel and Barbara Bechtel (McGlinchey); and his sister Charlene McClintock (Bechtel). He is survived by: his daughter Brandy Smith-Bechtel; his wife Robin (Schwalm); and his sister Debbie Nye (Bechtel). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
