He was predeceased by: his sister Elaine Wheaton (Terry); and his parents, Julius and Evelyn. He is survived by: his wife Sharon Lynn Otten; his children, Dawn Otten-Sweeney (Lawrence), Craig Otten (Kelly) and Jeffrey Otten (Tina); his grandchildren, Jake Sweeney, Auldon Sweeney-Wydo (Cody), Kristina King, George Betz, Savannah Otten, Calum Otten and Lila Otten; his great grandchildren, Benjamin King and Steele Wydo; and his nieces and nephews, Beckey Stuchen (Sean) and Scott Wheaton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hillsdale College in honor of Julius Otten.
