He was predeceased by: his father Elijah White Prater; his mother-in-law June Prater "Nannie"; his brothers, Charles Edward Prater, Johnny Ray Prater, White Benjamin Prater and Gary Brower; and his stepdaughter Teszera Barnhizer.

He is survived by: his wife Jewell Denise Prater; his children, Keith Hairbedian (Nichole), Tara Newman (Evan Gray), Troy Michael Prater and Jessalynn Lampkin (Alex); his siblings, David Prater (Twila), Lois Allen (David), Dennis Prater (Roxanne) and Carolyn Steele (Robbie); and his pet Tucker Joe. He is also survived by ten loving grandchildren; six great grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, September 8th 2026 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Merkle Funeral Service (9156 Summit St, Erie, MI 48133). A celebration of life was held on Wednesday, September 9th 2026 at 11:00 AM. A burial was held on Wednesday, September 9th 2026 at the Restlawn Cemetery.
