Dennis E. Athey Obituary
Dennis "Denny" E. Athey, age 87, of Gladwin, Michigan, passed away on May 31, 2026, at Gladwin Pines Nursing Center.
Denny was born on August 10, 1938, in Bay City, Michigan, to the late Erwin and Phyllis (Foster) Athey. He grew up with a strong sense of family and community, values that remained with him throughout his life. He was a proud graduate of Midland High School, Class of 1957, and soon after enlisted in the United States Air Force, beginning a life of service that reflected his dedication and character.
Following his military service, Denny built a long and respected career with Dow Chemical, where he retired as a firefighter and EMT. His work required courage, quick thinking, and compassion, and he carried those qualities with him in all that he did. After retirement, he continued to stay active by working as a car salesman, where his friendly personality and easy conversation made him a natural fit for the role. He enjoyed meeting people and sharing stories, and he approached each day with the same energy and humor that those around him came to appreciate.
On February 14, 1994, in Midland, Denny married Pat Evans-Athey, and together they shared many loving years. Their marriage was a special part of his life, and he treasured the companionship, laughter, and devotion they built together. Family meant everything to Denny, and he was especially proud of his children, Jon Athey and Susan (Carl) Athey-Krach. He also dearly loved his grandsons, Joel and Eli Krach, who brought him great joy. He is also survived by his siblings, Dirk (Roxanne) Athey, Mark (Lori) Athey, Scott (Debbie) Athey, and Erwin Athey. He was preceded in death by his sister, Robin Athey.
Denny was known by those who loved him as creative, funny, and loving. He had a gift for making people smile and for bringing warmth into every room he entered. His sense of humor was one of his most memorable qualities, and his creativity showed in the many things he enjoyed and the way he approached life. He had a deep appreciation for NASCAR racing and especially enjoyed restoring several El Caminos. He also loved riding motorcycles and spending time with his Lionel trains, interests that reflected both his hands-on spirit and his lifelong enjoyment of hobbies that brought him satisfaction and pride.
Those who knew Denny will remember a man who lived life with heart, humor, and determination. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
