He was predeceased by: his parents, Elmer Schmelling and Evelyn Schmelling (Moore); and his sister Beverly Husted (David). He is survived by: his wife Joan Finkler; his daughters, Karen Durgan (Ned II) and Marcia Miller (Dennis); and his brother Roger Schmelling (Clarelyn). He is also survived by seven grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, September 8th 2026 from 10:15 AM to 11:00 AM at the St. Mary's Catholic Church of Spring Lake (406 E Savidge St, Spring Lake, MI 49456). A Mass of Christian burial was held on Tuesday, September 8th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
Memorial contributions may be made to Reeman Christian Reformed Church in support of Don's great-granddaughter, Breslynn, and the church's mission work in Guatemala, where they help build homes and care for children.
