He was predeceased by: his son Gregory Van Portfliet; his parents, Adrian Portfliet and Hazel Van Portfliet; his brother Don Van Portfliet (Millie); his son Ron Van Portfliet; and his sons-in-law, Doug Brost and John Buursma.

He is survived by: his wife Gertrude (Koepke); and his children, Kimberly Buursma, Mark (Maria Van Portfliet), Don (Linda Van Portfliet), Brian Van Portfliet, Lisa (Jerry Grooters) and Linda (Kelly Bowers). He is also survived by his family with the help of his brother and brothers-in-law.
