He was predeceased by: his parents, Eugene Surman and Ruby Surman; and his sister Mary Kay. He is survived by: his children, Nicholas Surman and Emily Schmidt (Nathan); and his sisters, Colleen, Lisa and Kathy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In Joe's memory, donations may be made to the Muskegon River Watershed Assembly or the American Lung Association.
