He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur Mercer and Ethel Mercer; his siblings, Donna Stevens, Gracie Maitland and Bill; and his siblings-in-law, Carol Mercer and James Bell.

He is survived by: his wife Debra L. Mercer (Fitzgerald); his daughters, Stacie Grooters (Jack) and Darcy Reister (Martin); his grandchildren, Madelyn and Gibon Reister; his siblings, Ina Bell, Kathryn Pulsifer (Frank), Donald Mercer (Sue) and Arden Mercer (Gene); his siblings-in-law, Susan Brants (Juris) and Ted Maitland; and his friend Rick Martens (Diane). He is also survived by his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and more friends.
