He was predeceased by : his parents, Anton Thiel and Rose Krieger; and his sister Rosemary Zaruches. He is survived by : his wife Mary Sawyer; his children, Michael Thiel (Kathy), David Thiel, Linda Damlich (Rob Ballweber), Kenneth Thiel (Kim) and Amy Bennett; and his stepdaughter Suzanne Black (Blaine). He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
