He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Schaafsma and Wilma Schaafsma; his sister Kaylene Johnson; his parents-in-law, Everett and Julia Plooster; and his brothers-in-law, Jim Plooster, Bob Plooster and Ed Bredeweg.

He is survived by: his wife Nancy Schaafsma; his son Michael Schaafsma (Kylea); his grandchildren, Jaiden and Alex; his daughter Julie Miles (Josh); his grandchildren, Everlyn, Isabel and Peyton; his siblings, Kurt Schaafsma (Lynn) and Sue Brondyke (David); and his siblings-in-law, Bonnie Vandermeer (Dave), Sally Bredeweg, Sharon Plooster, Joanne Plooster and Ron Johnson. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and many close friends.
