He was predeceased by: his parents, Dr. Dana Whitmer and Esther of Pontiac's Indian Village. He is survived by: his children, Gretchen Whitmer (Marc Mallory), Liz Gereghty (Jim Gereghty) and Richard D. Whitmer; his grandchildren, Sherry, Sydney Shrewsbury, Maggie, Will, Jay Gereghty, Damira and Maleah Torrence; his sister Judge Judith Whitmer; his friends, Sam Karaguleff, S. Martin Taylor and Gregory Eaton; Nicoletta Tanase.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages all to do a quiet act of kindness in Dick's memory.
