He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Leatherman and Marjorie Leatherman (Brouse); his in-laws, Benjamin Lee and Margaret Shackleton (Burnett); his siblings-in-law, Ronald Martin Denniston, Benjamin Alan Shackleton, Richard Wiard and Jan Shackleton; his aunts, Linda Benton, Thelma Denniston and Faye Noffsinger; and his grandmother Rachael Brouse.
He is survived by: his wife Janet Lee (Shackleton); his children, Scott Allen Leatherman (Sara) of Fishers, IN, Lori Lee VanHarmelen (Mark) of Hudsonville, MI and Julie Lynn Williams (James) of Zeeland, MI; his grandchildren, Amber Lynne VanHarmelen of Williamston, MI, Benjamin Joseph Leatherman (Maddi) of Fishers, IN, Ian Edward Leatherman (Paige) of Fishers, IN, Amy Elizabeth Leatherman of Fishers, IN, Jacob Alan VanHarmelen of Bismarck, ND, Daniel John VanHarmelen (Breanna) of Portage, MI, Justin Daniel Williams of Zeeland, MI, Jennifer Kenia Williams of Zeeland, MI and Abigail Lee VanHarmelen of Hudsonville, MI; his siblings, Duane Leatherman (Linnea) of Indianapolis and Marcia Wiard of Sturgis, MI; and his sister-in-law Ruth Ann Denniston of Hudsonville, MI. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 18th 2025 at 12:00 PM at the Cook Memorial Chapel (4235 Prairie St SW, Grandville, MI 49418).
In lieu of flowers and in honor of Virgil, contributions may be made to Faith Hospice.
