He was predeceased by: his parents, John O'Dowd and Catherine O'Dowd; and his siblings, Jack, William, Michael, Dennis, Edward, Thomas and Eileen Holda.

He is survived by: his children, Tami O'Dowd-Williams (Mike) and John Hampton (Lynn); his grandchildren, Austin Bovia (Hannah), Caiti Bovia, Lauren Allen (Jake), Melissa Robinson (Tyler), Hunter Hampton and Jake Hampton; and his siblings, Patrick O'Dowd (Patricia), Mary Reska (late Joe), Peggy DeLaet and Shelia Oatley (Jim). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jim's name to the Vietnam Veteran's of America (VVA) local chapter 109 of Jackson, Michigan.
