Larry F. Bean Obituary
In keeping with his wishes, Larry has been cremated. The family is planning a celebration of his life to be held at a later date, where friends and loved ones will gather to honor his memory and share in the legacy of a life well lived.
Larry's legacy is one of service, simplicity, and deep-rooted love. He will be remembered as a dedicated public servant, a faithful steward of the land, a loving husband and father, and the most doting "Papa" to his grandchildren. His life touched many, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.
Larry F. Bean, 83, of Kalamazoo, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2025, at Bronson Methodist Hospital. A man of unwavering principle and quiet strength, Larry's life was a testament to public service, the love of the land, and above all, family.
Born and raised in Kalamazoo, Larry was the son of Harold and Crystal (Stantz) Bean. He graduated from Plainwell High School and continued his education at Michigan State University. From a young age, Larry was drawn to a life of service and justice. He dedicated his career to law enforcement, proudly serving as an officer with the Kalamazoo Township Police Department, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office, and ultimately as a U.S. Marshal. He was a respected member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Kalamazoo Lodge #98, where his leadership and steadfast integrity earned him the admiration of his colleagues and the community alike.
While Larry wore the badge with pride, his heart also belonged to the countryside. A lifelong farmer and horseman, he found solace in the early morning sun rising over the fields, and joy in the quiet companionship of his animals. The farm was not just a home, but a sanctuary where Larry's soul could breathe freely, and his hands worked with care and devotion.
On August 1, 1964, Larry married Joanne Wilkins, the love of his life. Their union was a source of strength and joy for over five decades until her passing in 2020. Together, they built a life rooted in love, hard work, and family. Larry was a devoted father to his son, Zach (Christy) Bean, and a deeply proud grandfather to Mason, Mia, and Mya – his "special three.". His grandchildren were the light of his later years, and he cherished every moment spent sharing stories, lessons, and laughter with them.
Larry is also survived by his brothers, Norm (MaryLou) Bean and Tim Bean Sr.; his sister, Sheila Campbell; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Dawn Tewe and Joan Miller; and his brother, Lawrence Bean.
