Alyce Esther Oertel Obituary

Alyce Esther (Ark) Oertel, a cherished matriarch, devout Christian, and pillar of her community, was called to her eternal home on February 15, 2026, just shy of her 94th birthday. Born on February 18, 1932, in Painesdale, Michigan, Alyce's life was a testament to the virtues of love, faith, and service.

Married to Harold Oertel on a beautiful autumn day, September 1, 1951, in Mass, Michigan, Alyce embarked on a journey of partnership and devotion that would last until Harold's passing. Together, they were blessed with three children, Sandy (Ric) Stern, Harold Eric Oertel (deceased) and Randy (Kristine) Oertel, who were Alyce's pride and joy. Alyce is survived by her sister Ruth (Bud) Huuki. Her beloved parents Waino and Elsie (Wesander) Ark, her brothers Wilho, Wayne, Bobby, Oscar, Sonny, and her sisters Ellen, Helen, and Jeannie, preceded her in passing.

Alyce's love multiplied with the arrival of her grandchildren—Annie, Megan, Becca, Tanya, James, Katie, and Nicole—and further blossomed with the birth of her great-grandchildren Tyler, Madelyn, Brayden, Kinsley, Drews, Ryder, Elayna, Kendall, Edison, Lyla, Austin, Henry, and Heidi. Each child added a new chapter of joy to her life, and she cherished every moment spent with them.

A proud graduate of Mass High School, Alyce's professional journey included roles as a dedicated secretary and a compassionate teacher's aide. However, she often said her greatest achievement was her role as a mother and homemaker.

Alyce's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. A devout Christian, she was an active member of the Alger Methodist Church, where her presence was a source of comfort and inspiration to many. Her commitment to her faith was evident in her service and her unwavering trust in God's plan.

Beyond her family and faith, Alyce's interests and civic involvement were vast and impactful. An ardent supporter of veterans, she was a life member of the VFW 6507 Chassell Auxiliary. Through her work with the Alger Parks & Rec and the Forest Lake Association where she was known as the "Matriarch of Forest Lake.". Alyce contributed to the enrichment of her community's natural beauty and the well-being of its residents.

Music and sports were among Alyce's many passions. Her talent at the keyboard brought melodies to life, creating a soundtrack to many family and church gatherings. A loyal fan of the University of Michigan sports teams, she shared her enthusiasm and team spirit with all who knew her.

Described by those who loved her as loving, intelligent, and faith-filled, Alyce's legacy is one of unwavering love and steadfast faith. Her life was a living example of Christian values, and she imparted these lessons not through words alone but through her daily actions and interactions with everyone she met.

Alyce Esther Oertel's journey on earth may have concluded, but her spirit and the love she shared will continue to resonate in the hearts of her family and community. Her memory will be cherished, her life celebrated, and her example followed by all who were blessed to know her. As we bid farewell to this exceptional woman, we take solace in the belief that she is at peace in the loving embrace of our Creator.

A late spring memorial service is being planned, and arraignments have been entrusted to the Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home Standish.
