Mary E. Shelagowski Obituary
Mary Elizabeth Shelagowski, a beacon of love and faith, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026, at McLaren Bay Region. Born on October 23, 1951, to the late Francis and Katherine (Goddeyne) Girard, Mary's life was a testament to the enduring power of devotion and joy. She grew up surrounded by the warmth of her family, a foundation that would shape her into the remarkable woman she became.
On July 11, 1980, Mary married the love of her life, Richard Shelagowski, in a union that would flourish for 44 years until his passing on January 21, 2025. Their love story was one for the ages, filled with shared dreams and mutual respect. Mary's legacy lives on through her beloved daughter, Melaine (Art) Dennison, and her son, Roger Shelagowski. She was the cherished grandmother to Arthur (Gabby) Dennison, Morgan (David) Dennison, Alyssa Dennison, and Dalton Shelagowski, who brought immense joy and pride to her life.
Mary's sisters, Kathy Stephan and Annette Durm, along with her brother, Noel Girard, will fondly remember her loving spirit. Her extended family, including brother and sisters-in-law Jan (Tom) Bridges, Pat (Randy) Genshaw, and Randy Shelagowski, as well as her numerous nieces and nephews, will miss her dearly. Mary was predeceased not only by her parents and husband but also by her in-laws Donald and Leona Shelagowski, brother-in-law Jim Durm, and niece Sara Quinn.
For over two decades, Mary's professional life was intertwined with the Plastic Tag and Trade Check Company, where she dedicated herself with the same passion she brought to every aspect of her life. Her work ethic and commitment to excellence were admired by all who had the pleasure of working alongside her.
Mary's heart was truly at home, where being a mother and grandmother was not just a role but her world. Her hands were rarely still, as she found great pleasure in creating beautiful cross-stitch pieces, a reflection of the care she put into every stitch of her life. She was an avid fan of Hallmark movies, a testament to her belief in the enduring power of love and the simple joys of life.
Christmas held a special place in Mary's heart, not just for the festivity but also for the traditions she cherished. Each November, while Rick was at deer camp, Mary would fill their home with the sweet aroma of baking Christmas cookies, a ritual that became a treasured memory for her family.
Yellow, the color of sunshine and happiness, was Mary's favorite, mirroring her optimistic outlook on life. She adored daisies, with their simple beauty and graceful reflection of her own character. Mary was a loving, faith-filled, and passionate soul, whose influence will continue to be felt by all who knew her.
Per Mary's request cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held later with inurnment in St. Anne's Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home. The family would like to give a special Thank You to Nurse Heidi, Dr. Zyrk, McLaren Hospice, and Symphony Tri cities for the compassionate care given to Mary.
