John will be remembered for the impact he had on the lives of those around him. Friends, family, and colleagues will cherish their memories and the time shared. Those who knew John will remember moments of kindness, warmth, and presence. Though words cannot fully capture his life, the legacy of connections and experiences remains. John’s absence will be deeply felt by those who valued his companionship.
He was predeceased by: his parents, Leslie Gussenbauer and Gertrude Gussenbauer. He is survived by: his wife Sally Mutschler; his children, Leah Gussenbauer (Matt Beenken) and Tobias Gussenbauer; his granddaughter Josephine Beenken; and his sister Beth Boydston (Denny). He is also survived by in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 14th 2026 from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM and on Thursday, October 15th 2026 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 15th 2026 at 10:30 AM at the Marywood (111 Lakeside Dr NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503).
A Luncheon will follow at 12 PM at the Vander Mill (505 Ball Ave. Grand Rapids.) In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grand Rapids Urban League and Habitat for Humanity.
