He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph O'Lear and Betty O'Lear (Cook); and his nibling Shannon Mary O'Lear. He is survived by: his wife Charlene (Kotecki); his sons, Michael Joseph O'Lear, Jr. (Lisa Hamameh) and Leonard O'Lear (Lisa); his grandchildren, Brynlee, Bryson and Brayden O'Lear; his siblings, Lynne Halleck (O'Lear) and Patrick O'Lear (Joan); his nieces and nephews, Scott Halleck (Melanie), Jason Halleck (Sherry), Lauren Baker (Eric) and Christopher Cieslak; his mother-in-law Bernadette Kotecki (late Leonard); and his sister-in-law Annette Cieslak (Mark).

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Salvation Army, donating to the Detroit area.
