He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles O., Sr. and Thelma Matthews (Beall); and his sister Catherine. He is survived by: his wife Thelma Matthews (Ellinger); his children, Kimberley Ann VanDusen and Charles O. Matthews, III; his grandson Jerad VanDusen; his great grandchildren, Amara VanDusen and Micah VanDusen; and his brother-in-law Daniel Ellinger (Aileen). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Active in arts and community affairs, including co-chairing the 1974 Festival of the Arts, he was awarded the Key to the City twice and received the Arts Council Festival Award for contributions to the cultural life of West Michigan.
