He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Ayleen; and his children, Charles (Debbie Hatcher), Joseph, Douglas, James (Brooke Geddie), Lynda (Perry Schermerhorn), Cynthia Seiler (Tom) and Sherrill Retlick (Steve).
Van's final gift to education was donating his body to the University of Michigan's medical school.
