Thomas E. Thornton Obituary

Thomas E. Thornton, known to many as Tom, passed away on July 27, 2026, in Merrill, Michigan, at the age of 80. He was born on April 25, 1946, in Saginaw, Michigan, and lived a life marked by hard work, loyalty, and a steady kindness that touched the lives of many.

Tom was the beloved husband of Joan (DeFore) Thornton and a devoted father to Thomas and his wife Kristin, and to Troy Thornton. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren and a cherished great-grandfather to four great-grandchildren. His family was the center of his life, and he took great joy in the time he spent with them, offering support, encouragement, and the practical wisdom that came so naturally to him. He is also survived by his sisters Victoria and Linda, his brother Jim, and his brothers- and sisters-in-law Karolyn Bisson, Ron and Kathy Renfer, and August DeFore. He was preceded in death by his sisters Marie and Diane. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will remember his warmth, humor, and dependable presence.

Tom spent part of his working life at Malleable Iron, where he was respected for his strong work ethic and dependable nature. He approached his work with the same steady determination that he brought to every part of his life. Those who knew him understood that he was the kind of man who could figure things out, get the job done, and do it well. He earned a reputation as a master mechanic, and it was often said of him, "if he could not fix it no one could.". That phrase reflected not only his remarkable skill, but also the confidence others placed in him whenever something needed attention.

He was a friendly, handy, and kind man, and those qualities were evident in the way he treated others. Tom had a gift for making people feel comfortable, and he was always willing to lend a hand when someone needed help. He was the type of person who could be counted on in both small matters and major challenges, and his presence brought reassurance to those around him. His practical nature and generous spirit made him a valued family member, friend, and neighbor.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
