She is survived by: her husband George Birkam of Monroe, Michigan; her daughter Erin Birkam (Luis Varona) of Clarksville, Tennessee; her siblings, Paula Chermside, Leslie Thompson (Doug), Sharon Conklin (Andy), Mark Chermside, Brian Chermside (Marcy) and John Chermside (Amy); and her grandsons, Mitchell, Matteo and Luis.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the National Kidney Foundation or to the American Diabetes Association.
