He was predeceased by: his wife Gertrude McAvoy-Burgess; his parents, James and Lela; and his daughter Dianne Peterson. He is survived by: his children, Dana Hammerschmidt, Duane Burgess (Debbie) and Deron Burgess; his grandchildren, Miranda Burgess, Katie Hammerschmidt, Natalie Burgess (Dayna) and Matthew Hammerschmidt; his siblings, Janice Bragg, Bruce Burgess and Edwin Burgess (Jill); and his son-in-law Lawrence Peterson. He is also survived by 14 nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 6th 2026 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Michigan Memorial Funeral Home (30895 W Huron River Dr, Flat Rock, MI 48134). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 7th 2026 at 10:00 AM at the same location. A burial will be held on Saturday, March 7th 2026 at the Michigan Memorial Park (620 S Monroe St, Monroe, MI 48161).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Jay may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
