He was predeceased by: his parents, Elmer Aloysius and Ann Louise Thering (McDonald); his siblings, Joe Thering, Mary Lou Willoughby (Lyle), Robert "Sam" Thering (Paula) and John "Jack" Thering; his parents-in-law, Stuart and Helen Merrill; his in-laws, Ann Thering, Ken Miller and Dan Bookey; his nephew Brian Thering; and his niece Shelly Rau.

He is survived by: his brother Jim; his wife Sara; his children, Caroline Pramuka of Mt. Pleasant, James Thering (Amy) of Mt. Pleasant and Nicholas Thering (Sarah) of Spring Lake; his grandchildren, Jack, Luke, Nate, Adam, Ben and Nadaly; his siblings, Tom Thering (Ellie), Jean Messersmith (Russ) of Grand Rapids, Elizabeth Miller of Grayslake, IL and Patrick Thering of Mt. Pleasant; and his in-laws, Rosie Thering of Elsie, Connie Thering of Williamston, Sharon Able (Tom) of Leesburg, FL, Glenda Bookey of Hermitage, TN, Caroline Merrill of San Francisco, CA, Wes Merrill of Leesburg, FL and Katherine Sluyter (Ron) of Fenton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
