He was predeceased by : his brother Jimmy. He is survived by : his wife Diane MacKinnon; his father Edward; his children, Daryll Yarger (Holly Spice) of Temperance, MI, Morgan Slatinsky-Hurd of Newport, MI and Mackynze Slatinsky of Newport, MI; his sisters, Lynn Shiets (Norb) of Fremont, OH and Karen Bezeau (Barry) of Monroe, MI; and his grandsons, Tucker Hurd, Mason Hurd and Gabe Weaver.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials may be made to Stepping Stones Therapeutic Riding or River Raisin Centre for the Arts.

“When Garth did construction at our house, it was mixed with intermittent quick talks & laughter! He did great work! One funny time, though, he accidentally left our side door open & let our toy poodle out! I would've enjoyed seeing the robust Garth, chasing the white fluff ball through the neighborhood! She ran to my Mom's house, 2 blocks away! Garth, out of breath, rang the doorbell & my Mom let her in. Garth knew we would be broken-hearted if he couldn't catch her! Now we're broken-hearted -”
