He was predeceased by: his parents, James Mattila and Bertha Mattila (Maki); and his wife Betty Jeanne Smith. He is survived by: his children, Robert Jr., Debbie (Jean Orgas) and Connie Wright (Scott); his granddaughters, Maggie and Kylie Wright; his pet Brewer; his siblings, Shirley Johnson (Roger), Carol Johnson (Gary), Virginia Luoma (Paul), Vivien Grischke (Jon), Ruth Mackrain (Tom), Mike (Vicky), Vicky Kline and Laura Christoff (Sam); his daughter-in-law Bridgette Tonks; his siblings, Carl, James Jr. (Karen), Barbara Mattila and Violet Medhurst (James Medhurst); his brothers-in-law, John Keranen and Ken Kline; his parents-in-law, Alva and Verna Smith; and his siblings-in-law, Clyde "Butch" Smith and Marian "Sis" Erickson (Ron). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 12th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Memorial Chapel Funeral and Cremation Service - Hancock (1017 Quincy St, Hancock, MI 49930). A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 12th 2026 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the same location.
