John A. Spencer Sr. Obituary
John A. Spencer Sr., age 74, passed away on Monday, September 14, 2026, in Pinconning, Michigan with his family by his side. He was born in Caro, Michigan March 28, 1952, to the late Lester & Harriet (Richardson) Spencer. John grew up in the Linwood/Pinconning area. He married the love of his life Myrtle Whitman on June 2, 1972, celebrating 53 years of marriage before her passing in January.
John graduated from Pinconning High School and went on to build a hardworking life through a strong work ethic and dependable character. He worked as an equipment operator for L. Surath & Sons, drove trucks for Stone Transport, and later retired from Omni Source as a driver and operator. He took pride in honest work and was known for showing up, doing his best, and meeting each day with determination. His career reflected the kind of man he was, steady, reliable, and committed to doing what needed to be done.
He went from being one of the best players on the field to the biggest fan in the stands at sporting events and the racetrack, and he never missed a game or a race when he could help it. He loved watching all the kids in whatever event they were involved in, and he supported them with enthusiasm and pride. To many, he was affectionately known as Papa John, a title that reflected the special place he held in so many hearts. His presence at games, races, and family events brought encouragement and excitement, and his loyal support meant more than words can fully express.
Family was the center of John's world. He is survived by his children, Jonda (Charley) Zelek and John (Doni) Spencer Jr. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Tyler (Bree) Spencer Sr., Maylin (Dylan) Spencer, Jacob Spencer, Allan Rybkowski, Paige Protasiewicz, Isabella Kolb, and Alyssa Kolb. His great-grandchildren, Jeralynn Miller and Tyler Spencer Jr., who all were a source of special joy in his life, along with his bonus grandchildren, Lane, Carson, and Everleigh.
In addition to his many loved nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends - John leaves behind his fur babies, Missy, Ellie, and Cassie, who brought him comfort and companionship.
John is further survived by his siblings, Lynn Seelye, Debra Yankee, Richard Spencer, and Clyde (Mary) Spencer, as well as his sister-in-law, Millie Pitts. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Myrtle, and his parents, Hattie and Lester Spencer, whom he missed dearly. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Nathaniel & Barbara Whitman, his brother, Bob Goodman, his brother-in-laws, Alson Whitman, Roy Yankee Sr., and Michael Pitts Sr., his sisters-in-laws, Katheleen Whitman & Melody Nutkins.
John's life was one of devotion to family, loyalty to friends, and steadfast love for the people and moments that mattered most. He will be remembered for the way he showed up, the way he loved food, the way he cared, and the way he made others feel seen and supported. His memory will live on in the hearts of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, extended family, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. Though he will be deeply missed, the legacy of his kindness, his devotion, and his love will remain a lasting comfort to those he leaves behind.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 21, 2026, at 7:00 pm at Rivertown Funeral Chapel, with Pastor John Tousciuk presiding, with inurnment in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Friends and family may visit at the Chapel from 12:00 until time of service.
