Melissa A. Johnston Obituary

Melissa Ann Johnston, known affectionately to friends and family as Missy, passed away on July 21, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on November 23, 1971, in Bay City, Michigan, Melissa's vibrant spirit and unwavering kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Missy's life was characterized by her selfless nature and her relentless drive to aid those in need. She was a beacon of generosity, always putting others before herself. Her educational journey began at Pinconning Area High School, where she graduated with the class of 1990. Driven by her passion for helping others, she pursued a career in healthcare, earning her RN Degree from Delta College. Missy's dedication to her profession led her to further her education at Grand Valley University, where she completed her BSN degree. She continued to expand her expertise, becoming certified as a phlebotomist and a respiratory therapist.

Her professional life was rich and fulfilling. Melissa began her career at Covenant, where she worked for three years as an RN. She then joined the team at Standish Ascension Hospital, followed by a long tenure of over 15 years at My Michigan Health. Her colleagues were not just coworkers but cherished members of her extended family. Melissa was also a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Parish, where she cultivated her faith and sense of community.

Melissa's drive was evident in her love for travel, music, and the joyous company of loved ones. A recent trip to Honolulu, Hawaii, with her nephew Jessie was a highlight among her many adventures. Her enthusiasm for life was infectious, whether she was exploring new destinations, enjoying concerts, or simply cherishing moments with family and friends.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Melissa will remember her as the epitome of courage. She faced life's challenges with a strength that inspired everyone around her. Her legacy of selflessness and generosity will continue to live on through the countless lives she touched.

She is survived by her mother, Mary Lee Johnston; her nephew, Jessie Johnston; her uncle, Richard (and wife, Betty) Compeau; and her aunts, Leona Dean-Harrow, Carole Gromaski, Charlotte Krawczyk, June (Arnold) Wilson and Tina Bergeron. Melissa's special friend, her beloved dog Lucy, will also feel the absence of her gentle presence. She was predeceased in death by her father, George Johnston; her brother, James Johnston; and her grandparents, Clifford & Elaine Compeau and Lester & Ida Johnston, as well as her uncles Tom Dean, Jerry Harrow, Bernard Gromaski, Leonard Krawczyk, and Michael Bergeron.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to My Michigan Standish Hospital and their staff for the compassion and care given to Melissa and her family.
