He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Matthews and Frances Matthews (Van Bergen); and his brother Frederick "Joe" Matthews. He is survived by: his wife Barbara Matthews; his children, David Matthews (Stephanie), Jacqui Struna-Matthews (Michelle), Nicholas Matthews (Samantha) and Nathan Matthews; his grandchildren, Michael Matthews, Shawnee Rethwill (Brooks), Brendan Matthews, Hailey Matthews, Brayden Matthews, Sofia Matthews and Remi Matthews; his stepgrandchildren, Michael, Kaitlyn and Sarah Branyon; his siblings, Kay Ritter (Alan), Bob Matthews (Carol), Tom Matthews (Sandy) and Bill Matthews (Vivian); and his sisters-in-law, Barb Matthews and Mary Lou Hannigan. He is also survived by several great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, May 12th 2026 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Wednesday, May 13th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A rosary was held on Tuesday, May 12th 2026 from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services - Westside (3926 S 9th St, Kalamazoo, MI 49009). A Mass of Christian burial was held on Wednesday, May 13th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church (1150 W Centre Ave, Portage, MI 49024).
