He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Herbert Lee and Virginia Smith (Martin); his wife Jeyne Sue DeJonge; his children, Sue Melin (Dale), Herbie Smith, Linda Stebelton (Lonnie Smith), Billy Smith (Lisa), Richard Smith (Jill), Pam Smith (Tom Kosak), Paula Jones (Michael) and Tina Griswold (Rick); and his sister Janice Price. He was also cherished by 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren.
