He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur Cecil Carlson and Gertrude Ava Carlson; and his sister Constance Deschutter. He is survived by: his wife Mary Katherine (Burke); his children, Katherine Milia (Terry), Mark Carlson (Heather) and Patricia Slaven (Brian); his grandchildren, Kyle (Ashley), Karmen, Jacob, Joanne (Eric), Ronnie (Anna), Andy and Katy; his great grandchildren, Sophia, Max, Lennon, Louie, Mara and River; and his sister Karen Martin (Ken). He is also survived by cousins, nieces, nephews, and grand dogs and cats.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to St. Paul's United Methodist Church or Leader Dog for the Blind.
