He was predeceased by: his parents, Leo Kanerva and Paula Kanerva (Heikkila); his siblings, Tom, David and Bonnie Mattson; his grandson Eric Thompson Jr.; and his nephew Davey Kanerva.

He is survived by: his wife Virgie Komisar; his children, Michael (Kelly), Jerry (Barb), Bobby (Terri), Brad (Penny), Eric (Jill) and Diana "Dee Dee"; and his grandchildren, Brandy, Brittany, Melanie, Jessica, Ryan, Bobby Jr., Aaron, Kristi, Lexi, Angela, Bradley Jr., Andria, Megan, Preston, Emily, Brienna, Kandy, Maranda, Warren Jr., Varonica and Audra.
