He is survived by: his wife Patricia Pleasant; his children, Michael Newton (Monica) of Houston and Marlana Alexander (Andell) of Atlanta, Georgia; his grandchildren, Madison of Houston, McKenzie Newton of Houston, Colin of Atlanta, Georgia, Cass of Atlanta, Georgia and Chase Alexander of Atlanta, Georgia; his siblings, Bertha Garrett, Mable Collins of Houston, Retha Ridgell of West Monroe, Louisiana, Charles Newton (Chamrueng) of San Antonio and Steve Bell of Farmerville, Louisiana; his siblings' children, Lawrence Newton of Saginaw, Michigan, Stephon "Marbury" Vaughn of Saginaw, Michigan, James Jr. Vaughn (LaShawn) of Saginaw, Michigan, Dorothy "Toni" Vaughn of Saginaw, Michigan and Patricia Vaughn of Saginaw, Michigan; and his close friends, Charles Dallas and Leon Clark.
