David Bruce Hertzberg Obituary
David Hertzberg, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, peacefully passed away on October 22, 2026 in the home he built. Born on February 10, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late Robert and Edna (Rillie) Hertzberg.
In 1964, he married his high school sweetheart, Marian Schmidt, and together they shared a remarkable 62 years of marriage. Their journey was filled with love and the joy of raising their children: daughters Beth Hertzberg, Barbara Gibbon, Brooke (Tony) D'Ambrosi, and son Brian Hertzberg. David was also a devoted grandfather to Eric (Sara) Gibbon and Courtney (Colton) Wiegand, Lukas and Dylan D'Ambrosi and a proud great-grandfather to Emmett, Finnegan and Alyna. Also survived by brothers: Bob (Becky) Herzberg and Jack (Polly) Herzberg, son in law Kevin Gibbon as well as in laws, and many nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Standish Sterling Central High School in 1963, David served his country with honor in the Navy for three years. Following his military service, he embarked on a fulfilling career at GM Powertrain in Bay City, where he worked for 35 years before retiring in 2001. Not one to rest, David then founded Hertzberg Builders, where he spent over 20 years sharing his skills and passion for craftsmanship, leaving a lasting impact on his community.
David's commitment to service extended beyond his professional life. A dedicated member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church for 62 years, he served as a Trustee for more than 25 years, and his leadership as Lincoln Township Supervisor for over 15 years was marked by integrity and dedication. His contributions to the church and community will be remembered by all who were fortunate to know him.
A man of many talents, David was an avid horseshoe player, earning numerous championships throughout his life. He found joy in helping others, always putting their needs before his own, and his kindness and generosity touched the lives of many.
David was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Barbara Gibbon; parents, Robert and Edna; and in-laws Rudolph and Alma Schmidt.
David's life was a beautiful testament of love, service, and dedication. His memory will forever be cherished by his wife Marian, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and all who knew him.
A service to celebrate David's life will be held on October 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 5622 Johnsfield Rd, Standish, MI, with Pastor Matthew Dent presiding with burial to follow at the Sterling Cemetery.
