He was predeceased by: his parents, Adrian Smits and Gertrude Smits; and his sister Shirley Visser (Rick). He is survived by: his pet Sophie; his wife Beatrice Vander Galien; his daughters, Jodie, Ariel and Grace; and his sister Bonnie Oosterbaan (Tom).
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, November 13th 2026 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the Northminster Presbyterian Church (3633 W Big Beaver Rd, Troy, MI 48084).
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that memorials be sent to Sierra Club (https://www.sierraclub.org), the National Park Foundation, or to Northminster Church.
