He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur Kaiponen and Helen Kaiponen; his wife Pat Kaiponen; and his sister Betty Perrault (Jerry). He is survived by: his children, Bob Kaiponen (Jill) and Vicki Neher (Jerry); his grandchildren, Kristy Kmet (Dale), Jennifer Mundy (Justin) and Sidney Kaiponen; his great grandchildren, Zak Kmet (Alecia), Grayson Mundy and Harper Sabourin (Penelope); and his great great grandchild Cameron Kmet.

His commitment to helping others extended beyond his personal life as he was an active member of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.
