She was predeceased by: her parents, Joseph Bengel and Hilda Bengel (Thelen); her son-in-law George Heckman; her grandson Grant Heckman; and her siblings, Jeannette Weber Pohl (Donald), Joan Thelen (Edgar), Adeline Schneider (Vern) and Robert Bengel (Gladys).
She is survived by: her husband Jerome Smith; her children, Thomas Smith (Sandy), Jeanne Hanses (Dan) and Joan Esch (Steve); her grandchildren, Vaughn Smith (Haley), Colin Smith (Hannah), Taylor Trierweiler (Logan), Sam Heckman (Katie), Claudia Heckman, Kayla Acre (Zach), Quinn Counseller (Alex), Taryn Hanses, Megan Schneider (Alton), Grace Downes (Daniel), Faith Pung (Devon) and Julia Esch (Drew Nurenberg); and her siblings, Richard Bengel (Alice) and Agnes George (Charles). She is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be held on Sunday, September 20th 2026 at 1:30 PM at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel (210 N Westphalia St, Westphalia, MI 48894). Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 20th 2026 from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the same location. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, September 21st 2026 at 10:30 AM at the St. Mary's Catholic Church (201 N Westphalia St, Westphalia, MI 48894). A committal service will be held on Monday, September 21st 2026 at 11:30 AM at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery (201 N Westphalia St, Westphalia, MI 48894).
