He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence Sweeris and Nell Sweeris; and his brothers, Leslie and Kenneth Sweeris. He is survived by: his wife Joan; his children, Lynn (Gary Kretz), Lori (Rick Folkertsma), Leanne Sweeris and Amy (Brad Sytsma); his grandchildren, Adam, Megan Kretz, Sarah Kretz, Chad Folkertsma, Amanda, Tevontae Abraham, Abby, Ben and Noah Sytsma; his sisters, Carol Vander Ark and Joy (Rick Knurr); and his sister-in-law Carol Hemmes. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren.
