He was predeceased by: his parents, William Smith and Magdalen Smith (Goergen); his brother Marvin Smith; his brother-in-law Ralph Russell; and his nephew Jason Smith.

He is survived by: his wife Dorothy Durben; his children, Sharon Monson (Ray) of Adams, Barb Stoker (Tim) of Elko, Tom Smith of Tea, SD, Shelley Thompson (Todd) of Aurora, SD and James Smith of Minnetonka; his grandchildren, Brian Monson (Jennifer), Eric Monson, Kylie Stoker, Elijah Stoker, Ty Smith, Troy Smith, Marcus Berndt (Alyssa Thevenot) and Jenna Berndt; his great grandchildren, Dominic, Oliver, Everett Monson, Zyaire Berndt and Olivia Berndt; his siblings, Albert Smith (Shirley), Johanna Russell and Bob Smith (Diane); and his siblings-in-law, Lita Smith, Norman Durben and Mildred Durben. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John the Baptist Church in Johnsburg or Sacred Heart Catholic School in Adams.
