Jim Koloc wrote a sympathy message

“I am so sorry to learn of Kern's passing. Principled, gracious and brave, a gifted singer and musician, Kern had a mind like a steel trap and heart as big as a mountain. I will never forget our time together as a friend and co-worker, especially the day we gathered friends to taste wine and he kept the place in stitches with his jokes for what seemed like hours. I am grateful for his friendship and thank him for his sacrifices abroad as a fellow veteran.”
