He is survived by: his wife Krysti Atwater of Bemidji; his daughters, Theresa Thiemecke (Kurt) of Bemidji and Isabella Carlson-Atwater; his stepchildren, Kandi Jenson (Mark) of Bemidji, Amber Vareburg (Shane), Bart Glatzmaier (Tanya) of Bemidji and Wylli Tschudi (Marissa) of Bemidji; and his siblings, Jonel Axtel (Rodney), Sarah O'Dier (Bob), Susan Kaufmann and Steve Atwater (Vicky). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
