He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert Schlegel and Dorothy Schlegel (Tretter); his wife Irene Gross; his son Jeff Schlegel; his children-in-law, Celina and Michael LaDouceur; his siblings, MaryAnn Virnig, Patricia "Patsy" Miers, Kenny Schlegel and Robert "Bob" Schlegel; and his brothers-in-law, Andrew Virnig and Lyle Bednarek.
He is survived by: his children, Bert Schlegel of Lakota, Dave Schlegel (Nancy) of Pillager, Mike Schlegel (Sabrina) of Maple Lake, Ned Schlegel (Susan) of Des Moines, Renee LaDouceur of Brainerd, Roxi Schmitz (Paul) of St. Cloud and Russ Schlegel (Amber) of Brainerd; his siblings, Christy Schlegel (Grace) of Minneapolis, Lorraine Virnig (Adam) of Hillman, Ray Schlegel (Diane) of Chisago and Kathy Jones (Chuck) of Arizona; and his siblings-in-law, Jerome Miers of Schaumburg, Illinois, Helen Schlegel of Harding and Sharon Schlegel of Pierz. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 16th 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the St. Francis Catholic Church (412 N 8th St, Brainerd, MN 56401). A Mass will be held on Friday, October 16th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
