He was predeceased by : his parents, Mel Hertzog and Mary Ann Hertzog (Hiller); and his brothers, Dale, David and Matty Hertzog.

He is survived by : his wife Carol Fasching; his children, Shawn Hertzog of Scottsdale, Arizona and Kim Shepard (John Sparks) of Lutsen; his granddaughters, Savanna Shepard and Isabella Sparks of Lutsen; and his siblings, Mary Fasching (Roger) of Dayton, Julie Millerbernd (Steve) of Winsted, Mel Hertzog (Karen) of Greybull, Frank Hertzog of St. Cloud and Charlie Hertzog (Becky) of Waverly.
