He was predeceased by: his parents, Theodore Bechtel and Harriet Bechtel (Peterson); his wife Mary Whalen of Joseph's Catholic Church; his sons, Jerry and Tim Bechtel; and his brother Jerry Bechtel.
He is survived by: his children, John of Lansing, IA, Sue (Bob Harris), Snell of New Albin, Rose Blake (Bill) of Waukon, IA, Jim (Crystle) of Caledonia, MN, Paula Bolstad (Stacy Gramlich) of Ferryville, WI and Joel (Tina) of LaCrescent, MN; his daughter-in-law Crystal Schulte of Dorchester, IA; and his grandchildren, Luke, Kayla, Lee, Amber, Kody, Jade, Zachary, Karli, Madison, Thomas, Jordan, Samantha, Cassaundra, Kristina, Sierra, Kaitlyn, Mitchell and Kyle. He is also survived by 12 great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, June 13th 2025 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at 136 Elm St, New Albin, IA 52160.
