He was predeceased by : his parents, Willard Nelson and Shirley Nelson (Muck); his grandparents, August, Catherine Nelson (Grimm), William and Jane Muck (Rickard); his siblings-in-law, Melvin and Grace Carlson (Sornberger); and his sister Diane Nelson.

He is survived by : his wife Roberta "Bobbi" Carlson; his children, Carolyn Ritthaler (Michael), Marilyn Nichols (Thomas), Philip Nelson (Wendy) and Chad Nelson (Tami); his grandchildren, Mikey Ritthaler (Hannah), Nathaniel Ritthaler, Megan Ritthaler, Seth Ritthaler, Tommy Nichols, Bobbi Grace Nichols, Will Nichols, Nichola Nelson, Bethany Nelson, Sarah Nelson, Lucy Nelson, Levi Nelson, Victoria Nelson Elliana Nelson and Ilexa Nelson; his great grandchildren, Azealia Ritthaler and Walker Ritthaler; and his siblings, Stuart Nelson (Mae Belle), David Nelson and Maryann Chisum. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Covenant Park Bible Camp.
