He was predeceased by: his parents, Anton Schmitt and Beverly Schmitt; and his siblings, Susan Larson, Mary Jo Gilbertson and David Schmitt.

He is survived by: his wife Teena; his daughters, Elizabeth Schmitt and Courtney Sturges (T. J.); his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jack and Anthony Sturges; and his sister Diane Laue (Charles).
