He was predeceased by: his parents, William Smith and Opal Smith; his wife Sharlene Backman; and his sister Phyllis Turnbull. He is survived by: his children, Scott Smith (Margie) of Fayal Township, Mark Smith (Mary Jo) of Virginia, Barry Smith and Peri Swenson of Lakeland; his grandchildren, Lisa Smith (Adam Dawson), Sara Louma (Matt), Ryan Smith (Blair) and Ashley Barton (Kyle); his great grandchildren, Easton, Parker, Emme Louma, Paisley, Kyla Barton, Irie and Jude Smith; his nieces and nephews, Paul Hanton, Paul Horoshak, Jill Morriss and Sue Briski; and his close friend Chuck Bainter.
Visitation was held on Monday, May 4th 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Christ Lutheran Church (201 Station 44 Rd, Eveleth, MN 55734). A funeral service was held on Monday, May 4th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to a charity of your choice are preferred.
