He was predeceased by: his parents, John Saumer and Bernadette Saumer (Swartz); his stepfathers, Ahti Wiita and Robert Kuchta; his brothers, Jerome Saumer and Robert "Bobby" Saumer; his parents-in-law, Eino and Ellen Johnson; and his son-in-law Greg Barnes.
He is survived by: his wife Bonnie; his children, Lee Saumer (Karen Pariseau) and Thea Barnes; his grandchildren, Tabatha Western (Boris), Samantha Delich (Greg), David Turner (Crystal), Brady Littler (Michalina), Zach Barnes, Anneka Yee (Jeremiah) and Kate Ludwig (Micah); his pet Penny; his siblings, John Saumer (Kathy), Dan Miller (Connie) and Janine Highland (Ronald); and his sister-in-law Darlene Saumer. He is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren.
Gene was also known for his wonderful sense of humor while living with Parkinson's disease and was often sharing jokes, quoting one-liners (often from Blazing Saddles), and bringing laughter to those around him.
