He was predeceased by: his wife Fern Swanson (Martenson); his brothers, Wallace Swanson and Harlan Swanson (Glennis); and his nephew Steve Swanson. He is survived by: his children, Mark Swanson, Julie Lund (Steve) and Jill Whisler (Brian); his grandchildren, Michael Lund (Erin), Matthew Lund (Bethany Tangen), Sara Lund (Theodore Krumholz), Brianna Fern Whisler, Charles Roger Whisler, Thomas Whisler and Robert Whisler; his great grandchildren, Christopher John Lund and Sydney Fern Lund; his brother Ellis Swanson (Gerry); his sister-in-law Dorothy Swanson; and his close friend JoAnn Hoffman.
Memorials preferred to Our Saviour's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hastings.
