He was predeceased by: his parents, Menton Hillstad and Gladys Hillstad (Halland); his sister Evie Eickstad; his brothers-in-law, Shorty Eickstad and Virgil Quick; his son-in-law Doug Liebl; and his stepsiblings, Marvin Berens and Dorla Kellerhuis (Bernie).
He is survived by: his wife Vangie; his children, Diane Spaeth (Bob), Duaine Hillstad (Colleen), Todd Hillstad (Laura), Jay Hillstad and Carrie Heisler (Joe); his grandchildren, Travis Spaeth (Robyn), Lucas Spaeth (Jessica), Megan Askelson (Michael), Isaac Spaeth (Jessica), Andrea Weisenberger (TJ), Jason Hillstad, Katherine Struxness (Reed), Beth Naylor (Dan), Jessica Claeys (Dan), Timothy Liebl (Jessica), Ryan Liebl and Jacob Liebl (Alise); his siblings, Joyce Quick, Norris (June), Gorden (Connie) and Reuben (Cathe); and his stepsiblings, Nadine Schoenborn (Ron) and LeRoy Berens (Sharon). He is also survived by 31 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Thursday, August 27th 2026 at 10:00 AM at the First Lutheran Church - Mahnomen Starts. A funeral service was held on Thursday, August 27th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the First Lutheran Church - Mahnomen. A burial was held on Thursday, August 27th 2026 at 12:00 PM at the First Lutheran Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Lutheran Church, Mahnomen Historical Society or St. Michael's School.
